NEWS RELEASE

A Runcorn firm has walked off with the title of Northwest Automotive Company of the Year – on the same day that it signed a contract for £100,000-worth of new business.

Electron Technical Solutions Ltd, based on Astmoor Industrial Estate, was named top performer by the Northwest Automotive Alliance at the industry’s Oscars, the Accelerate Supplier Awards, held in Birmingham’s International Convention Centre.

And the day of the announcement was one that managing director Steven Schofield will never forget.

In the morning he tied up a £100,000 contract to supply the firm’s surface coating technology to a client from Yorkshire. In the evening he was acclaimed by his peers for his achievements in revolutionising his company.

“We have built up a momentum for change over the last 18 months, starting with the award of the TS16949 accreditation,” said Steven. “We have changed the way we do things and we’ve also changed the culture. And it hasn’t stopped – things are still progressing.

“The whole team has embraced what we are doing. The Northwest Automotive Alliance (NAA) has provided a lot of support, as have PDS Consultants.”

Electron TS paints plastic components for manufacturers including Land Rover, Honda, Bentley, BMW Mini, Jaguar and Aston Martin.

Neil Barlow, NAA chief executive, said: “Apart from the size of their operation there is no difference between Electron’s standards and those of the regions global vehicle manufacturers. In terms of attitude and quality, they are in the same league.”

Electron was created out of a company that failed in 2002. After initial success, its fortunes took a downturn when poor customer confidence impacted on sales and turnover fell from £4million to £1.8million in 2004-05. Now, after embracing the principles of Lean manufacturing and moving the entire production process, the firm is doing better than ever.

Turnover is predicted to hit £4.2million this year, while reducing costs has allowed Steven to win new business more easily. “Sales will probably grow by 25% in the next year,” he said.

Electron TS were one of three Northwest firms short listed for the Company of the Year award. Also nominated were Elstons Ltd of Wigan and Auto Marine Cables Ltd of Manchester.
